With that in mind, let’s see how you can send an email with an earlier date.

Changing the date and time on your Computer

A very simple way of sending an email with an earlier date is to set your PC’s clock to the time you are trying to simulate before sending the email. Some older email clients such as Outlook Express accept this date and send it to the email server with the local date and time.

How to do it:

  1. In Windows 10 Right click on the clock on your desktop.
  2. Select Adjust Date/Time.
  3. Change the date to be as needed and click Okay.
  4. Write and send your email.

Even if this method works rt, the email metadata still contains the correct date. Therefore, this method can fail for several reasons:

  1. Depending on how your email is set up, the time and date can also be overridden by your email provider.
  2. Subsequent relay servers (the computers that send your email to their destination) ignore the computer’s timestamp and still use the server time.
  3. The metadata from your email server shows the time the time it received the email from you, not the time you wrote and sent it.
  4. The receiving email server still stamps the correct time of receipt before sending it is forwarded to the recipient.

For example, in the image above of the metadata of an email, the real time and the date contain four different times:

  1. Delivery Date : Thu, Sep 08 2016 17:31:45 +0100
  2. Received: from mail from mail147.extendcp.com with spam virus scanning (Exim 4.80.1) for EMAIL ADDRESS; Thursday, September 08, 2016 17:31:45 +0100
  3. Server (Version=TLS1_0, Cipher=TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA_P384) ID 15.1.609.9; Thu 8 Sep 2016 16:31:40 +0000
  4. Received: from DB5PR03MB1415.eurprd03.prod.outlook.com 15.01.0587.013; Thursday, September 8, 2016 4:31:40 PM +0000
