Changing the date and time on your Computer

The metadata from your email server shows the time the time it received the email from you, not the time you wrote and sent it.
The receiving email server still stamps the correct time of receipt before sending it is forwarded to the recipient.

To view metadata for any email in Gmail, click the three dots in the top-right corner of the e -Mail. Then click View Original. As you can see from the screenshot below, the metadata shows the correct date and time for each stop the email makes on its way to the recipient.

Even though you could change your computer time and it’s reflected in your email application, the true time is visible to anyone with a little digging.

Creating an SMTP Server

So the email server will use the correct date and Timestamp your email, but what if you could set up and control your own email server?

Email works with Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and SMTP servers are not incredibly difficult to set up or use.

If you have an earlier version of Windows, especially a server operating system like Windows Server 2000, then you already have an SMTP server on your PC and all you have to do is turn it on and configure it to use your E emails.

However, Windows 10 no longer includes an SMTP server.Luckily, there are many free SMTP server programs out there and you can download one of them. This is quite a hassle just to make an email date look different, but if it’s really necessary this may be the only way.

hMailServer is one of the most popular free email servers. I’ll give you a quick overview of the installation and configuration.

Get and download the latest version of hMailServer.
Run the installer . You can accept the defaults.
Make a note of the administrator password you choose, as you will need it later.
Click Finish to complete the installation.
In the hMailServer interface, click localhost, click Connect and enter the password.
Click Go to the Domains tab.
Click Add a domain.
Enter your domain name and click Save.
Click the domain name in the domains list on the left side of the interface, and then click the Accounts subfolder.
Click Click Add and enter the account information for the email account you want to create on your domain.

To the actual email transfers set up, you need to get information from the ISP you registered the domain with. W That said, this is not an easy process and I’ve only given you the basics here.

Use Inspect Element to Modify Webmail

If you are using Gmail or another webmail client, then use Google Chrome’s powerful “Inspect Element” feature to temporarily change the HTML code that displays an email on the screen, and then take a screenshot of the displayed email to ” Prove’ that the email contains a specific date.

Remember that this is essentially a forgery, so be aware of your legal liability if you engage in this type of behaviour .

Open the email you want to change in your Gmail account.
Right click on the displayed date and select in account extmenu Inspect.
Double click on the time text below gridcell in the element inspector and change the text to the date and time , for which the e-mail should be displayed. The body of the email itself changes when you click Return in the Inspector.

It won’t fool the FBI, but it might be good enough for your professor.
