Outsmart LinkedIns Ugly Tombstone Logo Box

If your profile shows unattractive gray boxes next to one of your jobs, it’s time to learn how to remove them. You do this by connecting to a Company Page.

I know I probably lost half of you with this idea, but stick with this – it’s simple.

I (also ) often see the gray boxes on profiles because one or more jobs are not attached to a LinkedIn Company Page. No appendix, no pretty logo next to your job title.

Why should you care about company logos on LinkedIn?

Starting with a little history, As LinkedIn goes to When we first introduced logos, they weren’t a big deal.

But now, if your profile has too many gray boxes, it says, “I haven’t worked for viable companies. i am not a player I don’t even play with players.”

This isn’t the meta message you want your profile to send.

You also need to connect to a company’s site to to appear in it his staff and alumni search results.

What is the main cause of missing logos?

So it’s good to be aware of the situations causing your profile to have gray boxes.

I see 4 common reasons for missing logos:

  1. Unemployment.
  2. Self-employment.
  3. A previous employer no longer exists.
  4. An employer exists but has not set up a company page on LinkedIn.

Company logos for the unemployed

Let’s start with unemployment. Annoyingly, LinkedIn gives you 2 things when you show yourself as unemployed:1. First, the LinkedIn algorithm pushes your profile down in search results. 2. Second, you will get a gray logo box.

If you are unemployed, report yourself as an employee at your former company until you find a new job. It’s pretty normal for people to be months or years behind updating their profiles. So it’s not a big deal.

Nevertheless, be sure to accurately reflect your employment details on your CV – that’s what matters.

Company logos for the self-employed

Next we talk about self-employment. If you’re self-employed, set up a simple Business Page with a logo.

Company logos for companies that no longer exist

But what if your former employer is gone? Companies no longer exist because:

  1. They are taken over.
  2. They go out of business.

First, if you can. If you can’t find a company page for an acquired employer, link to the company that bought it. Then make a note in the appropriate experience section. (Example: Employed by Sun, which acquired Oracle in 2010.)

Second, if you owned a closed business, set up a Company Page for it now. You could describe their products and services, or just give them a logo and call it good.

If you’ve worked for a closed corporation that you don’t own, you probably have to live with a tombstone. If you’re brave, you can create a business page for it. If you’re lucky, someone else has already done it.

The gray box problem gets worse as you go back in time. Think of the “pre-LinkedIn Company Pages” and “pre- LinkedIn” era.

Fortunately, once a company has a Page, LinkedIn is very picky about getting them to open it keep. They only let companies with fewer than 100 employees have their pages deleted.

Company logos for existing companies

Well, what if you have a job, but Doesn’t your company have a LinkedIn page?

Check again first. I had a case this week where one of my clients said their employer doesn’t have a LinkedIn page. When we checked, we found that they finally had a Company Page up.

If you can’t find one, the LinkedIn Company Page is usually owned by Marketing or Human Resources. You can suggest to the CHRO or Head of Talent Acquisition that they create one. It’s an essential part of employer branding.

If they hesitate, volunteer to take on the project for them.

How to get a logo

I also find that many of my clients “know someone”. They come back with beautiful logos. So you might as well ask around.

How to choose a logo

Once you have a designer and they give you some concepts, you have to make a decision .

Consider asking your network for their opinion via a LinkedIn poll. Share your 2 or 3 best choices and ask people to vote.

When you’re done, post a second update thanking your network for their help.Then point them to your profile for a quick look.

How to add a company logo to your profile

After you receive your logo and set up your LinkedIn Page, link the LinkedIn Page to your profile:

  1. Go to your profile and location.
  2. Click the edit button in the top right Pencil section of this job.
  3. Start typing the company name in the dialog box.
  4. Click on the appropriate company name when it appears.
  5. Ensure that the dialog box is filled with the company name and logo.
  6. Click click on “Save”.
  7. Check your profile to make sure it took.

That’s it. You just boosted your profile!
