Can I Make a Wish List Using Multiple Websites?

The best wishlist pages come from multiple sites.

No one cares about just one thing. Everyone has many hobbies, passions and interests. A woman in our building loves our local soccer team – so much that I’m worried about structural damage. But she’s also a big outdoor enthusiast and knows more about wild mushrooms than anyone I’ve ever spoken to.

It’s part of the joy and diversity of life, but it doesn’t always make shopping easy for someone. After all, when they compile a list, it won’t just be items from the soccer store. Nobody just has a list that just says SOCKS (okay, almost nobody, I’m sure).

People want their Wishlist to include ideas from many different websites, and while that might seem really great (and it is!), it can lead to some serious logistical difficulties.

That is, unless you create a wish list via a website that collects various ideas from around the internet and combines them into one list. It’s the best way to ensure all your interests are united and ready to go.

We all know what’s good about wishlists that come from multiple sites; You can find exactly what you want. Even if you stick with the biggest online sellers in the world, you don’t always get everything you need. With the world open to you, you naturally want to choose from multiple lists.

This can be a small problem though. To see how to do this, let’s look at the two traditional ways to create a wishlist from multiple websites.

  1. Get links to your gifts from all the different sites and save them in a document to send around.
  2. Create multiple wishlists, one on each page, and send people all of those wishlists.

Just by looking at this, you can start to see how there might be some problems, such as:

  • Not every site has one Wishlist feature, which means you either can’t get something from this site or you have to find another way to add it to your list.
  • Too much clicking around for people who might be going from list to list looking for the right gift.
  • It’s harder to tell if something was purchased in a shared document. Yes, people can delete the listing after they’ve bought it, but that’s an imperfect system. As such, you run the risk of two people buying the same thing.
  • Less technical people may not be sure how the shared document is supposed to work.

Creating wish lists this way is really just a lot of work for you and your shoppers. And what happens when there is too much work behind it? Well, people buy every old thing just to get it finished. There is no personalization if there is irritation. There must be a better way.

An easier way to create a multi-site wishlist

If you sign up for a wishlist generator who uses multiple websites, look out for these features:

  • One central place for my Wishlist. I hate sending a lot of links around and people hate getting a lot of links. If there was a page where I could say, “Here’s where I made my list,” that would avoid a lot of confusion.
  • A website featuring the best retailers in the world. The page does not have to be integrated with all other pages. It just has to accommodate them. It must give me the opportunity to look for gifts everywhere.
  • A simple selection experience. I want to create my wish list without having to say “I’m looking at A now” or “Where’s store B?”. I much prefer to search for what I want – games, clothes, homeware, whatever – and just click on it to add it to my list.
  • A way to buy gifts directly. A central location is no good if you can’t take action from there. I would love a place where people can buy directly from the list.
  • The ability to control who sees my list. I want to be able to create multiple lists and limit them to different groups – say, co-workers or family. When I do secret Santa at the office with a strict money limit, I don’t need them to see the list I have with my wife where we spend more on each other. And of course I don’t need them to see everything I want.
