Steps to Buying a Domain Name
Let’s say you have a list of catchy, catchy, branded and short domain names and you want to buy. Here are the steps to buy and register your domain name.
1. Choose a Reliable Domain Registrar
To get a domain name, you should first find a registrar that is accredited with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the non-profit organization who is responsible for coordinating all of the number spaces on the internet. Mailchimp offers domains managed by ICANN.

2. Find a domain availability check tool
The next step on your journey is to search for domain names and should include a domain availability check tool. This tells you whether the desired domain, e.g. tinysgarage.com, is available or not.

3. Choose the best domain name option

When you’re looking for available domain names, you’ll often find that your first, second, and tenth choices are already taken. Some of the different approaches you can take in this case are:
- Keep searching. Unleash your creativity and keep searching until you find something find something you love—or at least like.
- Choose a different extension. If .com isn’t available and you’re stuck on a specific name, consider .net or .org if you think that it works.
- Contact the owner. Perhaps the domain is already owned, but not used much. You could contact the owner with an offer.
4. Buy your domain name and complete the registration
Once you’ve decided on a domain name, it’s time to buy it. If you buy through Mailchimp, we’ll tell you the annual cost of the domain name and any available discounts.
During the checkout process you will need to enter your contact information, including an email address, to register the domain.
5. Confirm ownership of your new domain
Paying for your domain might seem like the last step in this process, but you also need to confirm ownership. This step lets you send email from the domain (e.g. [email protected]) and prevent others from using it without your permission.

If you buy your domain through Mailchimp, this process is easy. You will receive a confirmation email after completing your purchase. Just click the “Verify Domain” button in the email and follow the instructions on the next page, and you’re ready to start using your domain to build your brand. You only have to do this step once.
Buy a domain from someone else
If you already own the domain name you want, it may still be available. Assuming you find a must-have name, follow these steps to complete a purchase:
1. Find the owner’s contact information
Find the domain owner by looking up their contact information in the WHOIS directory. If it’s not listed, you may be able to contact it using the information you can find on the domain’s website.
2. Negotiate a fair price
Once you’ve made contact, offer a fair price for the domain. If you are unsure of a price, do your research. You can even hire a broker to broker the deal on your behalf if you really want the domain.
3. Complete the sale in escrow
Avoid sending money to a stranger over the internet. It’s just a bad idea. Instead, use an escrow service to ensure both parties are happy and your sale is as low-risk as possible.
