A resume statement is a short paragraph that often appears at the beginning of a resume. Not to be confused with a summary statement, the objective statement is less commonly used due to its many notable pitfalls. However, in the right place and time, the once-popular goal statement still serves a purpose.

Is a resume goal necessary?
Resume goals are rarely recommended by career experts and professionals today. It can be helpful to include one if you’re making a radical career change or tailoring your resume to match the job posting, since the objective statement provides a natural opportunity to include accurate keywords and job titles. But as a general rule of thumb, unless the job description specifically states that an objective statement should be included, then it’s unnecessary.
Here are a few reasons why the traditional resume goal has fallen out of favor in recent years :
CV objectives are a little selfish
As mentioned above, a resume objective tells the hiring manager what you want professionally, not what you can do for him and his company . It’s great to demonstrate your career aspirations, but companies tend to be more interested in their own best interests.
General resume goals leave hiring managers with questions

Overall rule: a CV summary has a more assertive tone. It uses quantitative results to provide the hiring manager with evidence of the job seeker’s capabilities and what they will continue to achieve when hired.

- Traditional objective statement: “To obtain a position in customer service”
- Modern summary statement: “Customer service representative with Eight years of experience working with customer accounts and resolving product and service issues. Maintaining a 90% customer satisfaction rate.”
- Traditional goal statement: “Get a job as an account manager.”
- Modern summary statement: “Sales and Marketing Manager with more than 10 years of experience in commercial sales and marketing. Exceeded all sales targets by 15% or more between 2012 and 2017.”
- Traditional target statement: “Work as a supply chain manager in the logistics industry.”
- Modern Summary Statement: “Supply chain analyst and self-starter with a track record of nurturing and improving up to 15 customer relationships at a time and identifying problem areas of service.”
So write a resume objective
If a resume objective is right for your job search, these three tips can help you avoid common mistakes:
- Keep it short. Don’t add fluff! A few productive sentences will suffice. Make sure every word is intentional and necessary.
- Describe the position you want in clear detail. Name and describe the position you are applying for your goals only as they relate to the job and industry you’re applying for.
- Explain what you can do for them. Take it one step further further by explaining how they match the company’s requirements the job posting for reference. This step distinguishes a strong resume goal from a weak one.
If none of the introductory statements feel right, you don’t need to include one to build a compelling resume. If you have one, remember that while a resume summary can be useful for job seekers changing careers or changing industries, in most cases a resume summary is best.
