It’s fast, stable, easy to use and free. FTP is a standard method of uploading or downloading files between your local system and your web server, and FileZilla is a solid client for day-to-day FTP requests.

Setting Options

You will need the following details regarding the FTP account on your server:

  1. Your website FTP address (usually ftp://example.com if your URL is http://example.com )
  2. Your FTP username
  3. Your FTP password

If you don’t already have an FTP account on your server, use your cPanel or the website administration tool to set it up one up – it has all the information you need. If in doubt, ask your host for instructions or help regarding an FTP account to access your web space.

Before connecting the FTP server, you should register it in the Site Manager. Once you register it, you only need one click to connect to the same server. Follow these steps to register the FTP server:

  1. In the main FileZilla window, click File > Site Manager.
  2. Click on New Website and give the new connection a name of your choice (example: My blog server).
  3. Enter the FTP address for your website in the Host field. If your website is http://www.example.com, the FTP address is usually ftp://ftp.example.com or ftp://example.com. Note: Don’t put a / at the end unless your cPanel or host specifically tells you to.
  4. Leave the port field blank. The default value of 21 should be used. Do not change this unless your FTP account details specifically state so.
  5. Select Normal in the Login Type field
  6. Enter the full username that you have received in the user box. It can be just a username or look like an email address (but it’s not). For example, it would look something like user or [email protected].
  7. Enter the password. Remember that the password is case-sensitive.
  8. Click OK.

Troubleshooting

If you have a problem, then it’s time to troubleshoot! Look at the top of FileZilla’s main window and check the messages.

  1. If no attempt was made to connect, the FTP address is incorrect. It only takes one character to be wrong and it will fail. Click the red X, disconnect, and click Site Manager to verify your entries.
  2. If it says the user doesn’t exist or Incorrect login etc., check the site manager setting and make sure they match your host provided FTP account and password details, or use the web server administration interface provided by your host to verify the existence of the Check FTP account again. Check your password carefully. It is case sensitive (upper and lower case). You may also want to ask your web host for help.
  3. If it says Could not get directory listing, you may need to change the transfer setting. In the Site Manager, select your FTP server and click the Transfer Settings tab. Select Passive” from Transfer mode and click OK.
