What is a master resume?

Your Master’s Resume is the document that lists ALL of your work experience, education and achievements. While a targeted resume should only be 1 to 2 pages, your master resume can be much longer. Your Master’s Resume should include:

  • Any full and part-time jobs or volunteer positions you’ve ever had
  • Any skills you’ve developed or responsibilities you that you have taken on
  • Tasks and special projects that you have completed and achievements that you have achieved
  • Any education and training courses that you have attended and any degrees, diplomas, or certificates you have earned

Even though putting this together may seem like a lot of work now and may take a long time depending on your work experience, it is time well spent. A master resume will:

  • Make it easier to write a targeted resume because you can select the specific jobs that show where you’ve done the type of work before , and Skills and Qualifications Required
  • Make it easy to remember jobs, titles, dates and other details
  • Help with it , to recognize work that attracts you. Because you list everything you’ve done, you can see if there’s a type of work you do most often, and then decide if that’s a positive pattern or something you’d like to change.
  • Show where you may have gapsso you can develop the skills you need for your dream job
  • Let you learn new ones Identify opportunities and maybe other dream jobs, because a full list of your skills and experience could show how you might be qualified and interested in jobs you never considered

How to write a master’s resume

The goal in creating your master resume is to have a document that contains all the details that will help you apply for a job. Your master resume should include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The type of job(s) you want
  • A brief summary description or Overview of your qualifications
  • Your education and training
  • Your professional experience
  • Your volunteer experience
  • Your memberships and associations
  • Any other qualities that can set you apart from other candidates, such as speaking other languages

Follow these steps to gather the information you need for each of your positions:

  1. First, collect old resumes and cover letters along with awards and other evidence of recognition or achievement. If you have a portfolio, peruse its contents to find letters of recommendation or mementos of successful projects.
  2. Use those old resumes and other documents to represent every job, internship, volunteer position, every Review committee or board experience, student group, training or other work-like activities you have participated in. Write them down chronologically and place your most recent experiences at the top of the list. Don’t worry about the length of this document. For each entry, include:
    • Organization Name
    • Organization Address
    • Your title and job description
    • The month and year you started and ended

For each of these work-related entries, you must also create sublists with their own headings. Example:

    • Under Duties and Responsibilities, list what you have done on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Whenever possible, use numbers to represent your results – for example: Responsible for the repair and maintenance of 20 forklifts spread across 3 different warehouses.
    • List under Skills on the work and core competencies that you have used or developed. Remember to start these bullet points with active verbs.
    • Under Tools, list all the machines, mechanical devices, and computer programs you used.
    • Under Awards, list the recognition you have received in this role.
    • Under Achievements, list your successful projects or assignments. Again, try to represent your results with numbers whenever possible.
    • Under References, list the names and contact information of your maintainers. Be sure to ask these people if they would be willing to give you a positive reference before adding them to the list.

Add add any other comments that you can. Describe your role in each position.

  1. Collect any training and education you have completed and are currently enrolled in. These can include anything from online courses to programs you have attended. Start with your most recent education or training and end with your earliest.Include the following for each entry:
    • The name of the course/program
    • The name of the organization/institution offering the provided education
    • Location of organisation:
      • For larger institutions such as colleges and universities, state the city and province. Example: Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB.
      • Provide full address for smaller communities or private organizations.
      • Provide website address for online courses, preferably as a hyperlink.
    • The month and year in which you started and ended, or will end in if you are currently enrolled
    • The certificate, diploma, degree, or other evidence you received
    • Exceptional grades or awards you received
    • The work and employment skills you acquired during this training, including projects, group assignments, and laboratory or field work
  1. Study the data of your inputs in the previous 2 steps. can you find gaps For example, maybe you took time off work to care for a sick family member? Consider the organizational skills and communication skills you developed or used during your vacation. Or maybe you traveled abroad for a year and worked in restaurants along the way? You may have acquired some important skills in these jobs. Add these experiences to your main resume.
  2. Think about how you’re giving back to your community. Employers know that volunteering is an opportunity to develop valuable skills. You can also add your work to raise funds for a charity.

Under the Volunteering heading, add:

    • The name of the organization or event you volunteered for
    • The location of your participation
    • The skills you used or developed

Let’s say your master’s resume includes a summer volunteering at a local animal shelter and working at your family’s restaurant, being a member of the Graduate Committee and coach your cousin’s softball team. Let’s take a look at all your achievements from this experience:

  1. Completed the necessary documents for admitting new animals to the shelter every day.
  2. Up to 20 animals cleaned Pens and common areas as needed.
  3. Served 8 tables, each seating up to 6, 3 evening shifts per week while still in high school.
  4. Designed and proofread a new menu every month.
  5. Efficiently resolving customer complaints and contributing to our A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.
  6. Graduated from high school with 30-level courses in math, science and English .
  7. Produced the invitations and banners ahead of schedule for our Graduate Committee.
  8. Coached softball team to citywide championships twice in the last 4 years.

Since you want to limit your target resume to 1 or 2 pages, you should list your accomplishments n choose carefully. Clearly, Achievements #1 and #2 are directly related to the job you are applying for, so you want to lead the way with those achievements. However, since this was only a short volunteer experience, you may need to find other ways to show the employer why they should hire you.

Numbers 3 and 5 definitely show customer service, so these should be listed next.

The fact that you completed 30-level courses in 3 core subjects while working through high school shows that you can multitask, so list #6 next on.

Achievements #4 and #7 demonstrate good communication skills. But #7 also shows abilities as a team player in the committee.Save #8 for the interview: If they’re asking about your leadership skills, this might be a good achievement to talk about.

But what about customer service for non-human customers? If you have pets, you might also want to list the skills you’ve gained by taking care of them. If you don’t have firsthand experience with pets, consider mentioning your appreciation for animals and being comfortable around them.

You may need to adjust your information to match keywords in the job post , but your well-targeted resume will be ready in no time.

Use your master resume online

You can post your master resume on major job boards or upload it to your LinkedIn account. Employers often go online to look for new employees using search terms related to the position they are hiring for.
