It wouldn’t be long before Google bought out YouTube and took over the startup for 1, $65 billion at the end of 2006. What was then considered a tremendous reach for a startup that had shown neither the ability nor the interest to turn a profit is now recognized as one of the smartest acquisitions of the past two decades.

Time magazine included YouTube on its cover for Person of the Year that same year. The person in question was “you”, specifically the content creator, with the cover featuring a mirror rather than YouTube itself. As YouTube grew, it added more features to serve content creators, such as: These include ratings, comments, embed features, live streaming and revenue sharing.

Many celebrities got their start on YouTube, with vlogging, gaming and comedy initially being the most popular type of content. YouTube today has hundreds of channels with millions of subscribers on almost every topic, with the top-grossing channel of 2021 being a children’s toy channel called Ryan’s World.

In 2014, YouTube launched a premium service with the goal to reduce revenue loss from ad blockers. YouTube Red was unsuccessful in its mission, reaching fewer than 10 million subscribers before relaunching as YouTube Premium. YouTube Premium, which bundles ad-free TV with YouTube Music, reached 30 million subscribers in 2020.

YouTube also branched out into live streaming around this time to stem the growth of Twitch as a video entertainment platform. Twitch still leads the way in terms of game streaming, but YouTube’s live streams have become another way for channels to engage with audiences.

YouTube also recently launched shorts, own clone of TikTok which has slightly different user interface and shorter videos. Some analysts consider it a competitor’s best chance to outperform TikTok simply because of YouTube’s massive reach with over two billion active users.
