Why a blog series?

  • People have short attention spans. I hate being the bearer of bad news, but most people don’t hang by your (or my) every word. Most people scan or skim posts. Shorter posts are better for today’s readers with short attention spans.
  • Complex posts are hard to digest. There’s nothing that turns a reader off like a post that’s too long or too complicated. When you create a series, it’s easier for people to manage.
  • To maximize your writing effort. Why spend hours writing a 2000-word tome, cramming it all into one post, and having to do it all over again the next day? By expanding posts into series, you can fill up your editorial calendar more easily.
  • To get the SEO advantage. Offering a series of related posts allows you to link the posts together, which helps your search engine optimization!
  • To increase your returning visitors. If you write a great opening post for a series, chances are people will come back for subsequent episodes.

When should you consider starting a blog series

  • A post is too long to read at once. If your post is over 1000 words, it may need to be broken into two parts.
  • You have a group of related topics that don’t fit well into one post. An example would be a set of holiday craft instructions. Although the posts are related to the holiday topic, they would be far too complex for one post.
  • You are explaining a complex topic. This is especially true when writing posts about blogging. A post about how to get more social media followers will include multiple subtopics such as Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon and more. This is a perfect candidate for a series.
  • Your topic lends itself to sequels or has natural breaks. Perhaps you are writing about a particularly dramatic time in your life. Instead of writing a long post, identify a “cliffhanger,” or natural pause, where you can end the first post and start a second. This will entice readers to come back to read how the story ends.

How to Run a Blog Series

  • Start with a plan . Outline how many posts you expect to make from the original topic. Plan the content in each post and make sure you have enough content to fill the planned posts (or avoid having too much in each post!)
  • Limit each post to 500-650 words. Keep each post simple and concise. If you’re usually less verbose, add more images to give the post more “meat.”
  • Introduce the series. Write a preview post the week before the series starts. Show your readers what the series is about and why they should read it.
  • Unless absolutely necessary, limit the series to one week. It’s difficult for people to follow a series of posts that start before a weekend and resume after the weekend. If the length of your series requires you to move into a new week, a) see if you can actually have two separate series, or b) be sure to explain to your readers that the series will be renewed into another week.
  • Don’t start a series in the middle of the week. Unless the series is a weekly feature that runs indefinitely on a scheduled day of the week, try starting your series on Monday or Tuesday.
  • Preview of next post . As you end each post in your series, you give your readers a glimpse of what’s to come. Example: “Now that we’ve talked about baking the perfect Valentine’s Day cake, come back tomorrow when I share how to create a beautiful Valentine’s Day table setting.”
  • Read the last post. When you start a new post in the series, review what you just covered. Example: “Yesterday we talked about making the perfect Valentine’s Day cake (insert link to yesterday’s post!). Today I’ll give you 4 easy steps to create a beautiful tablescape.”
  • Interlink posts. Any time you have the opportunity to link posts within a series, do it! If you have written other posts on this or related topics, include them in your posts as well. You can do this within the post body or add an Additional Resources section at the end of the post. Example: “If you enjoyed this fun Valentine’s Day series, check out my Easter Brunch series last year.”
  • Consider Experts/Guest Posters. If you want to make a series but don’t have the expertise to cover every aspect, invite an expert to guest post for you on the topics you’re unsure about. This will increase your credibility with your readers.
