Here at Off the Shelf, we love the book club. We love to meet up at someone’s house or a coffee shop and talk to our friends about books, drink wine, eat good food and laugh at life. But we also realize that sometimes it is not always possible to meet in person. Sometimes we want to do these things with friends who live far away. Our solution? remote book club! Whether you’re looking to continue your personal book club while social distancing or have been considering starting a club from your couch for some time, here are our top tips for starting and running a virtual book club.
1. Find a communication and coordination website or platform

First, we recommend finding a digital place where you and your group can communicate, vote on selections, and coordinate discussion times. There are several ways to do this, such as a Facebook group or dedicated book club organization websites such as Bookclubz or Book Movement. Or, if you prefer, email works well too. Here with SimonThese are very helpful in stimulating and guiding conversations, and often help you find different ways of thinking about the book and its characters.

We find it helpful to mention the next book (or possible options) and upcoming discussion dates before closing the meeting . Discuss who will vote or remind members to give their opinion before a specific date if a vote is required. Doing this before you end your discussion will keep the book club on everyone’s lips while maintaining momentum.
