The shonen genre of anime and manga has produced some of the most beloved and popular franchises of all time. There are plenty of series that have persevered and evolved over decades, but One Piece is still considered to be one of the most resilient titles of its kind. The anime has over 900 episodes and it looks like there are still years of One Piece content to eagerly anticipate.

In addition to manga and anime, there’s also been a real resurgence of popularity in One Piece video games. Anime video games can often be a mixed bag, so it’s helpful to examine how One Piece’s contributions stack up according to Metacritic.
One Piece: World Seeker takes advantage of the latest generation of gaming and features a sprawling open-world take on One Piece that tries to give the player as much freedom as possible. One Piece: World Seeker tells an original story set after the Whole Cake Island Arc that revolves around Luffy rescuing his crew from Prison Island. Despite the potential that’s present, World Seeker falls short (although the Xbox One version has the best score). There are a ton of Easter eggs, but they largely feel empty. A World Seeker 2 could be a real success with the right alterations.
One Piece: Burning Blood is one of the more recent One Piece releases and it”s just a pure fighting game that takes advantage of the anime”s large roster of characters and their powerful abilities. Burning Blood”s cel-shaded art style is attractive and the action is largely centered around the use of Devil Fruit powers. Despite how there are nearly 50 playable characters and tons of fan service, it still feels like a bit of an empty experience that won”t win fully satisfy One Piece veterans or win over newcomers to the series.
There are many different sub-series of video games that cover One Piece, but Unlimited Adventure is a series that started on the Wii and has largely been a Nintendo-exclusive series. Unlimited Adventure is a satisfying action-adventure game that also offers a versus mode that prioritizes fighting over story.

The game covers up to the Water 7 Arc, but it”s selective with which elements it covers and it still features a lot of original storylines. It”s also a rare One Piece release to have a dub from Funimation”s crew included.
One Piece: Grand Battle! Rush! is actually the fourth entry in the Grand Battle series of One Piece fighting games, but the first to be localized in America. Grand Battle! Rush! is the first gaming experience that most audiences had with One Piece. Grand Battle! Rush! adds a few RPG elements to the fighting game and covers the material leading up to the Water 7 Arc. This was especially exciting since the anime’s dub hadn’t even finished Alabasta Arc territory. Grand Battle! faces certain limitations, but its success leads to the release of a sequel, and that’s a serious improvement.

One Piece: Grand Adventure is the follow-up title to the fighting-RPG hybrid, One Piece: Grand Battle! Rush! Grand Adventure doesn’t stray too far from its predecessor’s formula, but it improves upon it. Grand Adventure covers all the way up to the Skypiea Arc and showcases a roster of 24 characters and over 50 support personalities. The game incorporates even more of the anime’s lore into the gameplay and it’s a helpful step forward for One Piece games. One Piece: Grand Adventure is a multi-platform release, but the Gamecube version is rated slightly higher than the PlayStation 2 alternative.
5 One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 (Score: 71)
Set right after the events of the series” two-year timeskip, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 attempts to do something different by creating an original narrative that it dubs “Dream Story.” This offers the title more freedom with its characters and the games” conflict centers around a gigantic battle between three all-star factions of pirates.

There are minor improvements over the first Pirate Warriors” gameplay that takes advantage of team battles. Pirate Warriors 2 also adds in 14 new characters, doubling the amount in the first game.
One Piece: Unlimited World Red is the fifth title in the larger Unlimited series of One Piece video games. Unlimited World Red riffs on established story arcs like Punk Hazard and Enies Lobby, but it creates a fresh narrative. Unlimited World Red can get bogged down in mini-games and other unnecessary features, but it’s a strong translation of the One Piece property and a reminder that it can work well as a larger open-world adventure title. Curiously, the Deluxe Edition of the game that was released has a slightly lower score than the original 3DS version.
3 One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 Deluxe Edition (Score: 76)
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 Deluxe Edition is the upgraded version of the long-running musou-style beat-‘em-up action franchise from Koei Tecmo. Pirate Warriors 3 continues in the footsteps of its predecessors and adds more chaotic concepts to the combat. Pirate Warriors 3 covers portions of the East Blue and Dressrosa Arcs, which isn’t a ton of ground. However, there are 37 playable characters, 10 more than Pirate Warriors 2. The game still suffers from issues like overbearing cutscenes, which break up the flow of the gameplay, but it’s still a step forward.
One Piece for the Game Boy Advance is an easy game to overlook since it’s an American produced title and one of the few entries to be on the Nintendo handheld. The Game Boy Advance really flourishes with the One Piece license and this introductory game is a fun action-platformer that adapts the entire East Blue Arc from the series. Luffy is the game’s main character, but over a dozen over Straw Hat Pirates appear as summons and there’s a robust roster of boss fights that should also appease fans of the anime’s earlier episodes.
1 One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 (Score: 76)
Koei Tecmo has found a surprising amount of success by taking their Dynasty Warriors musou genre and putting it together with other established properties like The Legend of Zelda or One Piece. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is the latest entry in the series and it”s also the most satisfying of the lot. The game tells an original story that applies a fresh direction to the Wano Arc and features a staggering selection of characters. Pirate Warriors 4 refines the mechanics from previous entries to reduce the gameplay’s repetitive nature and also adds in new features, like Titan Mode.
