Introduction

The Citi Double Cash Card’s 2% cash back—1% back at the time of purchase plus an additional 1% back when the card is paid off—provides relatively plentiful cash back rewards all-around. The extra 1% cash back upon purchase payment is only available when minimum payments are made on time.

The card also offers an introductory APR of 0% intro for 18 months on Balance Transfers, which is followed by the card’s standard APR of 13.99% – 23.99% (Variable). A balance transfer fee of 3% or $5 (whichever is higher) applies. There are other cards that offer balance transfer options without such a fee, but the generous introductory period makes the card worth exploring for balance transfers.

Other benefits with the Citi Double Cash Card include no annual fee, no cash back cap and a small array of extras, like $0 liability for unauthorized charges, 24/7 fraud monitoring and the now near-ubiquitous contactless and digital wallet options. Rewards are straightforward and easy enough to redeem, though there is a $25 minimum redemption.

Rewards

Earning Rewards

The Citi Double Cash Card offers a simple rewards system. Though not quite as straightforward as a flat 2% cash back card, the card’s 1% cash back when purchases are made and an additional 1% when the card is paid off rewards a total of 2% to those who pay at least the minimum due on time.

There are no bonus categories, so all purchases qualify for the up-to-2%-cash-back rewards and with no cap on rewards, there’s no limit to the cash back that can be earned. Cash back is not earned on balance transfers, cash advances, account fees, interest or on items that are later returned. Overall, the Citi Double Cash Card’s rewards are fairly easy to earn as long as the bill is paid on time.

Redeeming Rewards

Cash back rewards earned with the Citi Double Cash Card can be redeemed as a statement credit, check or direct deposit after $25 in reward credit has been earned. This means that to redeem rewards, a minimum of $2,500 in purchases must be made or a minimum of $1,250 in purchases must be made and paid for.

Cash back rewards earned with this card can also be converted to points with the Citi ThankYou Points loyalty reward program. The Citi ThankYou Points are transferable points when paired with a premium Citi ThankYou Points-earning card like the Citi Prestige or Citi Premier. ThankYou Points can be transferred to travel partners including Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Singapore Airlines, JetBlue and more.

Cash back rewards expire on this card if none are earned within 12 months or if the account is closed without the points first being redeemed.

Rewards Potential

To determine the rewards potential of the Citi Double Cash Card we have to consider what an American household might spend on a credit card each year. vccidata.com.vn Advisor uses data from various government agencies in order to determine both baseline income and spending averages across various categories. The 70th percentile of wage-earning households bring in $100,172 annually and we base spending on that number.

vccidata.com.vn Advisor estimates that the household has $26,410 in expenses that can be reasonably charged to a credit card. At 2% cash back, the Citi Double Cash Card would earn $528.20 cash back per year after all purchases have been paid off.

The Citi Double Cash Card offers an APR of 0% intro for 18 months on Balance Transfers, followed by the regular APR based on cardholder creditworthiness.

To be eligible for the introductory APR on balance transfers, a balance transfer must be completed within four months of account opening. Balance transfer fees of $5 or 3% (whichever is higher) apply to all balance transfers and are added to the account balance.

The Citi Double Cash Card shines against a card like the Chase Freedom Unlimited in its simplicity. The Chase Freedom Unlimited offers 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase, 3% cash back at restaurants and drugstores and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases. The Citi Double Cash Card’s up to 2% back on everything (1% when the purchase is made and 1% when it’s paid off) might work better for those who don’t expect to spend a lot of money on travel.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited could still work better for those who like eating out instead of buying groceries with its 3% cash back on dining and takeout, but it’s also a winner when it comes to 0% introductory APR on purchases, 0% for the first 15 months that your account is open – then 14.99% – 23.74% (Variable). The Chase Freedom Unlimited is not a solid option for balance transfer, as it has no 0% introductory APR for balance transfers and a 5% balance transfer fee.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited’s rewards never expire whereas the Citi Double Cash Card’s will if the card is left unused for 12 months or more. Both cards lack annual fees, but they differ again when it comes to travel benefits: The Chase Freedom Unlimited offers travel insurance—trip cancellation and interruption insurance and a secondary auto rental collision damage waiver. Both cards have a 3% foreign transaction fee.

One other benefit of the Chase Freedom Unlimited? The card offers a welcome bonus: Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.

The Discover it Cash Back earns 5% cash back in quarterly rotating categories when you enroll up to a cap and 1% cash back on all other purchases. The most unique feature of the card is the cash back match at the end of the cardholder’s first year. This feature makes the card an amazing card—for the first year. After the first year, some cardholders may do better with the Citi Double Cash Card. Both cards have no annual fee.

The Discover it Cash Back offers a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for only 14 months, unlike the Citi Double Cash Card’s 18 month period. The Discover it Cash Back has a regular APR of 11.99% – 22.99% Variable. The Discover it Cash Back, like the Citi Double Cash Card, has a 3% balance transfer fee. Unlike the Citi Double Cash Card, the Discover it Cash Back’s balance transfer fee goes up to 5% after the introductory period (see terms for more details). The Discover it Cash Back’s introductory APR also applies to purchases, something the Citi Double Cash Card doesn’t offer

The Discover it Cash Back card has no foreign transaction fees, but Discover cards aren’t accepted as widely among overseas vendors.

Where the two other card comparisons in this article both have a slightly higher standard rate APR than the Citi Double Cash Card’s, that’s not the case with the More Rewards Amex. With a 9.65% – 18.00% Variable APR on purchases and balance transfers (depending on creditworthiness) range, Navy Federal More Rewards Amex’s lower-end-of-range standard rate APR is significantly lower than the Citi Double Cash Card’s standard rate APR range.

That’s not the only way the Navy Federal More Rewards Amex provides more: With no annual fee, no balance transfer fee, no foreign transaction fee and no cash advance fees, this card’s not at all the same beast.

But that applies in more ways than one. Where the Citi Double Cash Card is a cash back card, the Navy Federal More Rewards Amex is a points card. This means that with the points rewards earned with a Navy Federal More Rewards Amex card, cardholders can use their rewards for more than just cashback. But to simplify for the sake of comparison, the points’ redemption value for cash back purposes is one cent, so points earned are effectively equivalent to cash back percentages if redeemed for cash.

Where the Citi Double Cash Card offers up to 2% back all around, the Navy Federal More Rewards Amex offers 3 points per dollar spent (effectively 3% cash back if redeemed for cash) on gas, transit, supermarkets, dining and food delivery and 1 point per dollar spent (effectively 1% cash back if redeemed for cash) on other purchases. As before, it comes down to priority: more cash back all around or higher rewards in specific categories and lower rewards on non-bonused purchases?

The card comes with a welcome offer: Earn 20,000 bonus points (a $200 value) when you spend $3,000 within 90 days of account opening. Note that you have to be a member of Navy Federal Credit Union to apply for the card, but eligibility for membership may not be as hard to qualify for as you might think. You can be a member if you or one of your family or household members has served in the armed forces, DoD or National Guard.
